Location – Nkhamanga, Rumphi District, northern Malawi

Activities – Improvements, optimization, and expansion of gravity fed water supply.

Period – 5 years, 2020-2025

Beneficiaries – 30,000+ villagers

Description

TIC is working with SOLDEV,  the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Development Department, the Mzuzu SMART Centre, and the Nkhamanga Water Users Association on this program.

TI has provided funding, training, and equipment to map the existing gravity fed scheme. Water is sourced in three streams up in the mountains (see background of picture), and brought by pipe to the villages. There is over 100 km of pipe in place!

Collection of data is now complete and experts in the US are analyzing the data to determine the scope of the work to be done.

The purpose is to undertake repairs and adjustments to the current system, to maximize its functionality, and to determine how best to expand the system to safely add another 20,000 users. The scheme is managed by the Water Users Association and all users contribute a modest tariff to ensure sustainability. However, demand for water is growing as the population expands and so additional capital infrastructure is needed. More information will be provided as the planning is completed.

Rotary Clubs in Canada are encouraged to participate in this global grant application to the Rotary Foundation.
