Jalawe Maternity Centre – MALAWI
Responding to a call for help, a maternity centre is rebuilt
Malawi is a land-locked country located in southeastern Africa. One of the least developed and poorest countries in the world, its largely rural population of about 20,000,000 relies primarily on agriculture. Generally it has a low life expectancy and high infant mortality rate.
Jalawe health centre is a rural clinic located in Rumphi District, northern Malawi, and offers maternity services to the surrounding rural area. Unfortunately their maternity wing became infested by termites and was in danger of collapsing. Despite this they continued to offer care as the next clinic is hours away – too far for women in labour. The Medical Council of Malawi indicated they would shut down the maternity wing if repairs weren’t started by October 31st, 2023.
TIC reached out to Rotary Clubs in Nova Scotia and Ontario. The support was marvelous! Funds allowed the centre to be stripped down and the termites eliminated, then re-built safely to provide maternity services to the surrounding area.
Big thanks to Rotary Club of Sydney, NS, the Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the Rotary Club of Ottawa West.
GOAL for 2024: We are seeking an additional $1,000 to complete construction of doors and the flooring for the labour room.
